Atkins Holds On And Takes Limited Sportsman Victory By Tony M. Suttles
Wayne Clayton claimed the official victory in the GM Performance Crate Late Model race ran at the Harris Motor Speedway on Saturday night September 20, 2008. Clayton led every lap of the race and was never challenged for the top position. The victory was the first of the season for Clayton at the Harris Motor Speedway. Clayton became the ninth different driver to take a GM Performance Crate Late Model victory this season. Dennis Williams finished second. Travis Knight finished third. Scott Childress finished fourth. Jon Thornburg finished fifth.
Donnie Atkins claimed the official victory in the Limited Sportsman race. Atkins led every lap of the race and took his first Limited Sportsman victory of the season. Five cars started the race but only three of the cars were scored at the finish with only one car actually finishing the race. Atkins grabbed the lead at the start of the race and led the first couple of laps before he lost control of the car and spun. Mitch Sill and Chris Jackson hit Atkins after he spun with Greg Dimsdale making minor contact with the Chris Jackson car. Lamar Jordan had already taken his car to the pits before the wreck occurred and there was only four cars competing for the lead. Following the incident Atkins was placed back at the front of the field apparently because everyone in the field was involved in the wreck. Greg Dimsdale and Chris Jackson thought the ruling was unfair and stopped their cars on the track and argued with the officials. Due to getting out on the track both of them were disqualified. Before the end of the race Sill and Jordan dropped out of the race and Atkins was the only car left and the checkered flag was dropped immediately. Mitch Sill finished second. Lamar Jordan finished third.
Stacy Brock claimed the official victory in the Super Stock Four race. Brock led every lap of the race and received the checkered flag. Following the race a protest was lodged against Brock’s car. After the inspection Brock’s car was declared legal and he retained the victory. Jamie Barbrey finished second. Tony Adair finished third. Will McGrew finished fourth. Brian Bentley finished fifth.
Dale Chapman claimed the official victory in the Stock Eight race. Bubba Smith led the first couple of laps in the race before he spun and relinquished the lead to Chapman. Once out front Chapman led the remainder of the race and took the checkered flag. David Ayers pressed Chapman for several laps before dropping off Chapman’s pace. David Ayers finished second. Chris Lytle finished third. Travis Robbins finished fourth. Bubba Smith finished fifth.
Josh Burgess claimed the victory in the Renegade race. Burgess led every lap of the race. Lloyd Dean Burgess ran with Josh the first couple of laps before he dropped off the pace. Jason Jolley ran with Josh the second half of the race. Although Lloyd Dean Burgess and Jason Jolley ran close to Josh Burgess neither of them made a serious bid for the top position. Jason Jolley finished second. Jason Edmonds finished third. Gary Tucker finished fourth. Matt Arrowood finished fifth.
Brandon Staton claimed the official victory in the Pure Stock race. Staton led every lap of the race but the victory did not come easily. Steve Penson pressed Staton the first half of the race and Ronnie O’Sullivan pressed him the second half of the race but Staton held them both off to secure the victory. Buddy O’Sullivan finished second. Kevin Hawkins finished third. Steve Penson finished fo urth. Ronnie O’Sullivan finished fifth.
